Krakow, Auschwitz, and Birkenau

The director of the camp who is an interesting Polish character has the nickname Bigs Big. Yesterday, we went to Krakow with all of the students from the summer camp. On the way, we were lucky enough to have the bus break down of course. Bigs Big who was sitting in the front of the bus goes on the intercom to say "small problem" and then a few minutes later starts saying "super problem" and we all have to get off the bus and wait until it is fixed. We basically had to walk all around Krakow with about 40 students, which was quite chaotic.

Krakow is a very beautiful city and a great place to be. We got a chance to go to a chocolate restaurant and I had this delicious chocolate cake. There was a 10 page menu of all sorts of chocolate drinks, desserts, and ice cream. Poland is a very beautiful country and there is a beautiful view from the camp of the countryside. This morning I made the trip to Auschwitz and Birkenau, which was quite a powerful experience. It was really amazing to see Birkenau which is left just like it was right after the war. You could see the places where all the people slept and where they carved their names into the walls, so that someone will remember them. You could also see how the train came right into the camp. When we were walking around there was a major thunderstorm and you could see lightening flashing all over the sky. It was quite ominous. Now, I just have to plan my lesson and maybe get ready to chaperone "the disco" (dance).
